Accordion Flash on Semiomantics XO

While I am in the process of creating an Evolution Flashsite for Monkey Valley Beach Nature Resort in Noordhoek, South Africa, I am thinking of ways of promoting it on the Internet.

A brilliant way of doing this is by using an Accordion Flash as I did on Semiomantics XO; see it yourself on my Web Design Blog and on the screenshot below. Click on it and it opens in an overlay in a bigger format. But going through to the website itself and seeing it all in action is much better to understand how it all works. It’s just a first try for me; there will be many versions with the same technique. It’s just a matter of getting the hang of it and then going a bit overboard :)

Accordion Flash on Semiomantics XO

This Accordion Flash on Semiomantics XO gives us the possibility to basically insert up to 8 pictures accompanied by semi-transparent text fields that we can fill with slogans or any form of information that relates to what we show or what we want to express.

We have seen the same principle on our brand-new Semiomantics Evolution Flash – see my example on Bookcovers.

Once I have sorted out the conversion of the intro video into something even slow lines like ours down here where pink elephants abound can download and see without buffering, I will provide links.

Ycademy Flash Basics Seminar

We have just finished day 1 of the Ycademy Flash Basics Seminar. It has been a full day of hands-on workshop, following step by step the training. Learning anything new takes time, effort and patience, but the reward is definitely worth it. 

Flash Sequence of Images 

In today’s workshop we focused on working with layers and a short flash sequence of images to create a  flash video. As a beginner its all about understanding the basics, learning the steps to be taken to create an animation and familiarizing oneself with this amazing tool. Each time you use it it gets easier.

Learning Flash at Ycademy Seminar

“Learning Flash” is the main topic at this month’s Ycademy Seminar – May 2010 that is.

Well – it can’t be done over the period of 2 days, however, it’s been well prepared over weeks and – while we all know there’s yet a wide field to cover over time to come -, we will already be able to successively integrate attractive Flash components into our websites and blogs, especially Semiomantics Evolution! This and more will be covered, including some additional fundamentals in xml.

Learning Flash at Ycademy Seminar

As discussed in my earlier post, I was interested to find out from ADOBE as well as Autodesk teachers and pro’s at the Autodesk Entertainment Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, last Thursday, how “learning Flash” advances us on a possible route in direction of 3D Animation and, ultimately, Movie Production.

Think “Avatar”. . . and immediately all those incredibly exciting programs and techniques that played key roles in the production of this stunning and ground-breaking movie when it comes to technologic innovations – come to mind. Accordingly, they were displayed all over at the Roadshow.

The answers I got weren’t really conclusive nor inspiring. It became more and more apparent that there are not too many connections to Web Design… the way we work it… online.

The Flash teacher herself uses Flash exclusively to animate her characters – sketched out on paper and scanned in first – and then those are sent on to other programs following the workflow. She sees Flash as a way to familiarize students with the computer. There was no knowledge of ActionScript.

So there’s a wide field open for us to expand into – and learning Falsh at the Ycademy Seminar and regular daily Ycademy Workshops will fastforward us in the visual development of our Blogs and their subsequent appeal.

Web Design Consulting

While I am clearly in the learning process myself – and who pretends that one ever ends? -, I will be integrating more and more Flash Components into “Web Design Consulting”. And I am excited about it!

Increase Your Business Exposure

As any business owner knows, business is about making those sales, whatever your product. Even if you are a handyman, tiler or carpenter, you need customers in order to sell your skill and be paid. You need business exposure to bring you those customers.

3D Animation follows Flash

When one studies the exciting Flash features and especially Flash Components in our Ycademy Workshops and in Adobe Flash Tutorials and Manuals, it becomes clear that knowing Flash is a good foundation when looking at 3D Animation.

From my professional background as an artist and moviemaker, it becomes more and more apparant that 3D Animation follows Flash.

3D Animation follows Flash

With the optic on “3D Animation follows Flash” or how Adobe Flash and 3D Animation are related – I will be asking the big Pro’s of Autodesk and Adobe at today’s Autodesk Launch about their professional opinion, on how the two are related even while being two totally different stand-alone disciplines, what combines them and especially where they differentiate – and how learning Flash advances us on the path to understanding 3D Animation… especially when having a fair understanding of Adobe Photoshop.

I’m sure I will be meeting with my friends from Toonboom Animation as well and get some conclusive answers.

So while the storms are hurling across the mountain range with heavy rains in their wake and workers cutting up the wood of fallen trees for the Church…, while transport strikes are still causing havoc all over the city… and on top we have to deal with destructive threats… just when we all should stand as one and welcome the world to the fairest of all Cape with its famous abundance of fresh creativity, musical vibes and talents, I’m off to share that cherished atmosphere of creative independent people of all ages, full of ideas, gifted with many accomplishments and  with big dreams… sort of an offline open-source format.

Never mind the chaos outside and around… if we have a Big Dream… it expands without limits and encompasses all that is!

Jean Francois Rauzier

Hyper Photography

French artist and by now photographer Jean Francois Rauzier has created the term of Hyperphoto to define his creations where large photos are composed of 600 to over 3000 high resolution detail images.

The results are smashing as is Rauzier’s success. The surreal pieces are combining technology, art and photography. The individual shots are typically telephotos which are then stitched together to a huge collage.

Thank Heavens for dear sisters who remind us of the important things in life; mine just wished me “Happy Pentecote” with the most beautiful photograph from her garden!

And indeed, the great German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, called Pentecote “das liebliche Fest”, the joyous feast where spring was in full swing with radiant warm skies, birds singing and flowers coloring the meadows and gardens. And then… if you look carefully… you discover little fairies within all the Magic . . . like little Anna in her “Magic Circle” below!

Flash Basics

In preparation for the Ycademy Flash Seminar this weeks Yorgoo Daily Training calls have focused on some flash basics.

Flash is the way media and interactive content is delivered to the customer or end user.We use it every day on our computers often without knowing. There is an estimated 864 million PCs worldwide running a Flash Player, that approximately represents 99 percent of internet enabled personal computers. Staggering numbers if you think about it.

Adobe CS5 Launch

As reported yesterday, I attended the official Adobe CS5 launch in Africa, headed by South Africa’s ADOBE Channel Manager Simon Bromfield and presented with a lot of speed, humor and wit by a team of so-called ADOBE Evangelists, who shot new awe-inspiring ADOBE CS5 features off into a large audience just when it was lying flat on the floor laughing and relaxing. They certainly mastered the ‘learn & play’ approach… very entertaining, decisively pro-Mac, shockingly professional inbetween… which just prooved they knew their stuff even when the keyboard failed or the mic only functioned on the nose… absolutely hilarious that Mo from India :).

Adobe CS5 Launch

Without going into the single Programs right now – namely ADOBE Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro – as I really want to work with them myself first, the ADOBE CS5 Launch made a few things clear to me:

First, we all have to move to 64 bit – YES! We Must! And I did. . .

Second, we have to up RAM in a BIG way – maximum is 196 GB (yeah…)

Third, whoever has ADOBE CS5 – especially the Master Collection – has a gem! Learn it, use it – even if you focus on certain programs or specialize on them.

Fourth, there is by far not only the Web. There’s incredible Print to this day and then there is obviously 3D Animation and the whole Movie Production sector with a lot of potential here in South Africa. Even during the show e-tv was looking for an After Effects specialist with 3 years’ experience to contact them to talk ‘job’. Now that’s good to hear when jobs are scarce, isn’t it?

Within the vast audience, I was one of a few who actually is rather ‘web-based’ and had some idea of Flash. The vast majority focuses on printed media and tv – both of which I was heavily involved with for about 20 years in 1900-something :).

Digital a way Mass Media can reinvent itself

This reminded me of an interesting article on “Digital not replacing traditional Marketing” by none other than Miles Young, gobal CEO of Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide – who told us in Johannesburg that “… the great mistake of today’s business environment is to believe that digital can fulfill the role of marketing. It will not! (…)

Digital has prevailed in the US and the core of our business has lost its sparkle but the sectarian approach of digital has had a profound harm in the US and the UK… (…)

The critical lesson here is to integrate digital into one’s business strategy but not to look at it as a ‘world apart’.

There is a huge propaganda going on against TV… but TV is growing and not declining and the myth of its death is sometimes exaggerated. Therefore, we have to be very careful when saying that digital can do everything mass media used to do. Digital is simply a way mass media can reinvent itself and remain relevant.

Digital is not a channel itself because everything has to be digitised. However, it is a complementary component that has broadened and expanded advertising but is not replacing it.

You can measure digital but you cannot calculate its effectiveness.

As for print media, they have themselves to blame for messing up and giving away online content for free. However, at the end of the day it is all about content and future investments. One of our clients, the Economist, is still doing well – people are still buying and reading because they have invested in journalism.

Look, after all it is not the end of the world for traditional marketing.”

Interesting food for thought, however, coming from a powerful leader – after all, Ogilvy Worldwide was voted “Best Agency” at the Cannes International Advertising Awards 2009. New  Clients won in 2009 are Cell C, FIFA, SAA, PPC and Coca Cola.

Ogilvy is getting increasingly involved in the sub-Saharan African market, headed by its Johannesburg cockpit and meltingpot of incredible talent and creativity. Young called it “…one of our best… which has produced great results. That’s why I came here to learn and not to teach.”

So let’s keep learning… I’m off to ADOBE CS5!

Redefine Great Entertainment

Redefine Great Entertainment – what should one expect with a title like that?

Initially, when starting off on the Internet, I wrote proposals and screenplays for the Movie, TV and Advertising Industry in Europe mainly.

Thereafter, I visualized the Internet becoming pivotal if not decisive in the media and entertainment industry ‘one day’, allowing ordinary people to create productions that follow their exact visions and intent without ‘commercial’ interference from too many sides causing too many compromises… that in so many cases destroyed a good, original project just to please the masses and their mammon.

It took some time… and some painful closing of both eyes to the atrocities swamping the net in terms of visuals – but then we had slow lines, slow computers and everything was sort of in its babies shoes.

Today, things have dramatically changed! We have MySpace and especially YouTube exploding with talent and with faster computers, faster lines and breath-taking technological developments on all fronts we are moving fast into having the same high-level quality on the Internet as we have become accumstoned to in the offline environment. It’s absolutely thrilling to see what is being achieved… and it’s wildly exciting!

Learn Flash at the Ycademy Seminar May 2010

I have booked my spot and will be reporting back at the Ycademy Seminar May 2010 – which is focused on those who wish to learn Flash as a premier step towards 3D Animation and TV – a huge market as we all know. The fact is that the better our understanding of basic Flash, the faster our jump into 3D Animation and beyond.

With that, my vision about 10 years ago, or even earlier – is fast becoming reality and it’s all about adapting and learning the skills with the right tools.

Best Cape Town Restaurants is completely built on a very basic Semiomantics Evolution Script and only needs a reduction in size concerning the Flash Movie as 8 MB are still too big for slow connections despite encoding by the new Media Encoder on Adobe CS4. Then it needs more branding and protection of course. And we want to copy it onto a CD to wipe out any connectivity problems and slow lines alltogether and thus create a brilliant marketing tool!

Which reminds me that I still have to design that one… the CD or DVD cover!

YORGOO Calls and Ycademy Seminars

We have set up a new conferencing facility returning to Microsoft’s Live Meeting. While I preferred the Adobe Conferencing, we could not upgrade to a full-featured version since Adobe does not provide a purchase option for residents in Greece (the only Euro-zone country). Worse, they don’t even reply to support tickets.

So we are back with Microsoft Live Meeting which we will need to configure and set up.

Basics and Workshop: Edit Semiomantics Evolution.

5. PowerPoint to Flash Conversion

Workshop: automate the conversion using a PowerPoint plug-in and embed the result in a blog post.

6. Flash Site Builder

Workshop: After the intro builder, let’s expand the exercise to build a flash website.
